The remarkable progress in developing sensors for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes has revolutionized our perspective on healthcare. Despite the great potential of implantable sensors to improve health management, they frequently fail to perform satisfactorily. The performance of implantable sensors largely depends on the biocompatibility of the materials used, sensing accuracy, and overall biological safety after implantation. However, a major challenge to the sensor’s clinical success is the poor functional integration of the sensor’s materials with the host system, leading to an inflammatory response and impaired sensing accuracy. Various immunomodulatory strategies have recently been established to overcome this key challenge. This section outlines the natural factors that determine biocompatibility, as well as various nature-inspired biocompatibility strategies and their relevant regulatory challenges. Finally, the section suggests some future directions for improving biocompatibility and accuracy in sensing applications.
